Chris Velazco, TechCrunch, 12/1/2011

By now, you’ve probably heard all about Carrier IQ, the mobile logging software that an intrepid researcher named Trevor Eckhart found lurking on a number smartphones from multiple manufacturers and carriers.

According to Eckhart’s research, Carrier IQ is capable of tracking what apps you’re running to where your phone is to what buttons are being pressed — it sounds scary, but Carrier IQ claims that collecting that information ultimately helps end-users.

Carrier IQ maintains they summarize performance information to help improve the quality of a carrier’s customer experiences, but what if you don’t want anyone else to have access to the sort of fine-grained data that Carrier IQ is capable of accessing? Here’s how you can figure out if your phone is affected, and how to go about fixing things if it is.

Does your phone have Carrier IQ?

Eckhart’s original report has shown that Carrier IQ has been discovered on HTC and Samsung devices, and that CarrierIQ counts Sprint among their domestic carrier clients. AT&T also appears to use Carrier IQ on their devices: a member of the XDA-dev forums called AT&T and was told that Carrier IQ is indeed preloaded on the HTC Vivid. Other carriers, including Verizon, Vodafone, and O2 have all denied that they use Carrier IQ on their devices.

Nokia and RIM were also among the companies that Eckhart claimed CarrierIQ provided their “mobile intelligence” services to, but they have vociferously denied the connection. The Verge also reports that the three devices in Google’s Nexus line are free of the logging service, so Nexus devotees can rest easy.

Fortunately, you don’t have to take their word for it, as it’s fairly simple to find out if your device has the tracking service running on it. If you’ve got a rooted device, all it takes is a quick download of Eckhart’s free Logging Test app (currently in its 7th revision). Once installed, hit ‘CIQ Checks,’ and you’ll know almost immediately whether or not your device is affected.

Rooting your device will also be required if you want to get rid of Carrier IQ on an affected device, so do look into it. The ease of the process will depend on your phone — for some its a total breeze while for others (usually newer devices) it can be a bit hairier. A quick Google search for “your device name + root” should get you pointed in the right direction.

What about iPhones?

Most of the original furor around Carrier IQ stemmed from its appearance on Android devices, but recent findings from iOS hacker chpwn has revealed that CarrierIQ exists in one form or another in versions of iOS as early as 3.1.3. For what it’s worth, it seems much less nosy than its Android cousin: chpwn seems fairly convinced that the iPhone variant isn’t able to access “typed text, web history, passwords, browsing history, or text messages,” and therefore isn’t able to send that data along.

While the iOS 5 version seems pretty toothless, chpwn admits that earlier versions of iOS “may send back information in more cases,” so the truly worried should make sure they’re diligent about updates.

What do I do about it?

Well, you could just live with it, but I’ll admit that it’s not a terribly appealing option. iOS users who want to disable logging have it pretty easy here: chpwn believes that in iOS 5, CarrierIQ is enabled during the initial setup process if you opt-in to sending log back to Apple. Since that’s the case, all it takes to disable Carrier IQ is to jump into Settings/About/Diagnostics & Usage, and change the setting to “Don’t send.”

If you’re an Android user and the thought of CarrierIQ unnerves you to no end, you have two options to rid yourself of it.

Uninstall Carrier IQ with the Logging Test app

This is about as straightforward as the process gets: once you’ve installed the aforementioned app, pay the $1 for the Pro key in the Android Market. Once you’ve done that, the option to remove Carrier IQ will be unlocked in the app, although ExtremeTech notes that the process may not always be successful.

Flash a custom ROM

This is a bit more extreme a solution than simply uninstalling the service, but it has its benefits: since many custom ROMs are based of the of the open-source Android code provided by Google, carrier-mandated services like Carrier IQ aren’t an issue. On top of that, a good custom ROM can also help give your aging hardware a shot in the arm thanks to software tweaks and features it may not get otherwise.

This process also requires you to root your device, and can be very tricky for first-time modders. If you decide to go this route, check out the XDA-developer forums for more information on what it takes for your specific device. CyanogenMod is a great first ROM for beginners, and they have a pretty extensive list of supported devices along with tutorials on getting it running.

John Cox, Network World, 9/27/2011

Revamped software maps enterprise policies to mobile users

BoxTone has released a new version of its mobile device management software, which now works with existing enterprise policy-setting and security tools. This integration lets enterprise IT staff apply those tools to mobile users.

Management and security policies set through Microsoft Active Directory now can be applied automatically to provision and update mobile users, and monitor their policy compliance, as well as report and correct violations or problems, according to the vendor.

The drive for the revamped MDM software came from customers and prospects, says Brian Reed, vice president of products for BoxTone. These companies already had in place IT, HR and other policies, procedures and systems for adding new hires, moving or promoting people, authenticating employees and so on. What they wanted was to leverage these existing resources for users with mobile devices, instead of managing them as a separate group, according to Reed.

BoxTone has offered a suite of server programs, with some integration with Microsoft Active Directory to manage and secure mobile users and their devices. But the new release of the suite is intended to rescue mobile management from being a separate application, largely independent of existing IT systems. It includes four key new elements:

- Modifications to the core BoxTone code to apply policy changes created via Active Directory or other tools automatically to mobile devices and users.

- A security “dashboard” for administrators, giving them a high-level summary of mobile users and devices and their real-time security and compliance status.

- “Governance, risk management, and compliance” (GRC) reports, to meet security audit mandates.

- And, compliance management engine, an application that monitors the security status of mobile users, devices, applications and services, to detect and correct violations or anomalies.

BoxTone isn’t the only MDM vendor addressing this space. Most of them have been working to encompass ever more of the elements, features and products that bear on mobility for enterprise employees. BoxTone claims it’s the first to achieve this depth of integration with policy tools such as Active Directory and Windows Authentication. An employee can be identified as a sales rep with the company’s New York office and assigned a given set of mobile access and use rights based on that role and location, for example.

“We go beyond the simple userID/password combination,” Reed says. “We can use an Active Directory ID for rights management, for example. We haven’t seen anyone else do this.”

Interface code links the BoxTone servers and databases with Active Directory-based IT policies, certificate authorities, VPN infrastructure, and systems management applications. Administrators can use their existing policy tools as they have in the past, and the interfaces hand off these policies requirements to BoxTone for implementation and monitoring. The BoxTone management application can be used to fine-tune mobile-specific policies. For example, a general policy of requiring mobile device passwords is applied via BoxTone so these passwords have a specified length with a mix of letters and numbers.

Currently BoxTone targets iOS, Android, and BlackBerry mobile devices, as well as older Windows Mobile products.

The new version of the BoxTone software is available now, and the price has increased to $49 per device, compared to $39 previously.

In April, Verizon began offering mobile device management services, based on the existing BoxTone software, to its business custoemrs.

Sarah Perez, TechCrunch, 9/27/2011

Isis, the carrier-led joint venture between AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, is today announcing support for its mobile wallet system from the majority of leading device makers, including HTC, LG, Motorola, RIM, Samsung and Sony Ericsson, as well as from NFC hardware provider Device Fidelity.

All of the handset makers are now committed to introducing handsets that will include Isis’ NFC and related technology standards.

Isis represents the carriers’ attempt at inserting themselves into the mobile wallet and mobile payments space in order to compete head on with other mobile wallet providers, including those from credit card companies, banks and platform providers, like Google with its Google Wallet program for Android handsets.

The technology in Isis’ mobile wallet uses NFC, or “near field communication,” which enables short-range wireless transactions at point-of-sale. Instead of swiping a credit card, consumers will be able to simply tap or wave their phone at the payment terminal at checkout in order to complete a transaction, and in some cases, even receive coupons or offers from the merchant.

NFC forecasts vary, with ABI Research estimating 35 million handsets shipped this year, and double that next year. IHS iSuppli has forecasted nearly 550 million handsets by 2015. Meanwhile, Berg Insight AB expects there to be 400 million by 2015. Whatever the true number may be, the consensus is that the technology is years out from consumer adoption.

However, the launch of the Apple iPhone 5 is right around the corner, and it will be a key turning point for NFC’s future, potentially shaking up those analyst estimates. If the iPhone 5 does not include NFC support, then adoption of NFC will lag. If it does offer NFC, the movement will continue its current forward momentum, and likely at a faster pace.

Today’s news from Isis supports the latter theory, given its seemingly reactionary nature. If Apple is moving forward with NFC, competing handset makers would have no choice but to also participate by offering NFC support in their handsets as well. That support doesn’t necessarily have to include a partnership with Isis, of course, but Isis is one of the leading movements in the space.

As for DeviceFidelty, it’s no surprise to see it also officially named as one of the companies powering the Isis mobile wallet, given its position as a leader in contactless technologies, including NFC.

It’s also interesting to hear this news now, when just yesterday, disruptive mobile payments company Square’s COO Keith Rabois boldly declared NFC as having no value, citing lack of merchant interest in the technology. The “merchant adoption” hurdle is valid, of course, but contactless infrastructure is already in more locations than consumers may realize, even if it’s somewhat underused. As of this spring, for example, MasterCard claimed it had approximately 88 million PayPass cards (contactless credit cards) and devices in use at 276,000 merchant locations, plus trials and rollouts underway in 36 countries, including at fast food restaurants like McDonald’s, KFC and Taco Bell, plus retailers like Sports Authority, Best Buy, and gas stations like BP and Hess. Visa offers a similar contactless support through payWave, with over 150,000 merchant locations in the U.S. and over 300,000 locations worldwide.

Contactless infrastructure is an important part to NFC’s adoption because NFC is based on the existing contactless infrastructure around the world. In other words, where there’s contactless support, there can be support for NFC too. This is, of course, assuming that the device in question offers “card emulation” mode, which lets the NFC device behave like an existing contactless card. But that’s the most logical onramp in the contactless to NFC transition, so that will likely be the case with most mobile wallet initiatives.

Residents in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio should be able to take advantage of AT&T’s flavor of LTE today. AT&T is the third carrier in the U.S. to launch and LTE network, behind MetroPCS and Verizon Wireless. Currently, AT&T does not offer any smartphones that can take advantage of the faster, next-generation network, but it does sell the USBConnect Momentum 4G modem, Elevate 4G mobile hotspot, and HTC Jetstream Android Honeycomb tablet that can connect to it. Plans for the USB modem and mobile hotspot start at $50 per month for 5GB of data usage, with $10 per GB overage fees. The Jetstream plans cost $14.99 for 250MB of data usage, or $25 for 2GB of usage.

AT&T has committed to launching LTE in 15 markets and covering 70 million residents by the end of the year.

Dan Seifert, MobileBurn, 8/25/2011

Verizon Wireless and Intuit have introduced GoPayment, a new service that allows small businesses to accept credit card payments for goods and services with a smartphone or tablet.

Similar to the Square program that is already available for the iPhone and iPad, GoPayment utilizes a card reader that plugs into the top of a smartphone or tablet and allows user to swipe a credit card to capture payment information. The card reader transmits the info to the GoPayment app on the smartphone or tablet, where it is then processed. Users can input the card information manually as well if the reader does not work. GoPayment is compatible with Android, iOS, and BlackBerry smartphones and tablets.

With the GoPayment app, merchants can create lists of popular items that they charge for to make the transaction quicker and easier. Tips and sales tax can be added on top of the items, and receipts with maps of where the transactions took place can be delivered to the customer via SMS or email. Intuit promises that no credit card data is stored on the phone, and any data that is transmitted is encrypted twice – once by the card reader, and a second time by the app itself.

Businesses can sync their transactions with Intuit’s QuickBooks software to save time when logging them, and GoPayment will support up to 50 different users on one account, ideal for businesses with multiple employees.

Verizon Wireless is offering the GoPayment reader for free after rebate to those who sign up for a GoPayment account. The basic service has no monthly fee, though Intuit will collect a 2.7 percent fee from each transaction. There is a monthly service for $12.95 per month that drops the fee to 1.7 percent. Customers who opt for the monthly plan will get their first two months free. Interested businesses can check out Verizon’s GoPayment site for more information

Joseph Volpe, Engadget, 7/14/2011

Not sure if you’ve noticed, but there’s an LTE race going on and VZW’s wasting no time sprinting to the lead. Despite rival AT&T’s February launch of a similar R&D space in Texas, Verizon’s cutting its first big red bow on the two years in the making Innovation Center. Located just outside Boston, the Waltham, Massachusetts-based labs began churning out LTE-friendly products in October of 2009, developing 30+ products to date. While most of these may never ride along the borderline blazing speeds of real-world LTE, the environment does give small startups a leg-up in a collaborative, deep-pocketed space (insert emphasis here). The research center also does double duty for the operator’s bottom line, offering its Verizon Ventures group first dibs on investment opportunities — like it did with Nomad Innovation’s LiveEdge TV product. Construction on a second mobile applications-focused facility is already underway in San Francisco with its very own opening ceremony slated for late summer. We’re glad to see Verizon spreading the bills to spur tech forward, but there’s one major thing the carrier forgot — an emergency room wing for all its crapware-bloated products. Official PR after the break.

AT&T is jumping into the actual 4G game with its first two LTE products.

The Elevate 4G mobile hot-spot devices is one of the first products that will use AT&T’s upcoming 4G LTE network. (Credit: AT&T)

The telecommunications giant plans to show off a laptop card called the USBConnect Momentum 4G and a mobile hot-spot device called the Elevate 4G–the first two devices that are compatible with its upcoming next-generation wireless network. The two products will be on display at an annual company showcase later today.

The two devices shouldn’t be confused with AT&T phones and products that currently carry the 4G tag. The two new products will be compatible with a flavor of 4G called Long-Term Evolution, which also powers the network that Verizon Wireless has been tirelessly touting in recent months.

AT&T has previously said that LTE theoretically is more than three times faster than its current “4G network” and 10 times faster than 3G. The company hasn’t disclosed actual comparisons.

AT&T, which plans to launch its 4G LTE network this summer in five cities and in 15 cities by year’s end, is racing to catch up to Verizon and Sprint Nextel in the 4G game. In January, AT&T followed T-Mobile USA’s footsteps and rebranded an upgraded variant of its 3G network, called HSPA+, with the 4G title, allowing it to continue boasting of the country’s fastest nationwide network.

The USBConnect Momentum 4G, the first laptop card compatible with AT&T’s upcoming 4G LTE network. (Credit: AT&T)

But AT&T is far behind Verizon when it comes to the deployment of 4G LTE. Verizon’s LTE network is in 77 metropolitan areas now, with plans to cover 175 markets by the end of the year. Sprint, meanwhile, is in 71 markets with its WiMax variant of 4G, although its expansion has stalled because of financing problems with partner and network operator Clearwire.

AT&T argues that the HSPA+ variant of 4G, which is available in 80 percent of the country, allows for a more smooth transition when moving between networks.

“Our customers will have the benefit of access to both our LTE network and our HSPA+ network,” Jeff Bradley, senior vice president of devices for AT&T, said in an e-mail. “This will provide a much more compelling and consistent speed experience as customers travel across our network.”

The company also argues that in some cases, its version of 4G is just as fast as Sprint’s WiMax. However, AT&T has moved up the timetable for its 4G LTE deployment, underscoring the importance of keeping pace with the competition. When launching a new network, laptop cards are typically the first product out of the gate. More recently, mobile hot-spot devices, which use the cellular network to generate a small but portable Wi-Fi hot spot for other devices, have become an increasingly popular way to introduce a new network.

For AT&T, the Momentum and Elevate are a good start. The Momentum laptop card will sell for $49.99 with a two-year contract. The device has a slot for a MicroSD card that can hold up to 32GB of data. It weighs 1.06 ounces.

The Elevate hot-spot device will cost $69.99 with a two-year contract. It has a color 1.77-inch LCD display that shows the Wi-Fi network name and security key. It weighs 3.6 ounces and can be used for up to five hours and connect up to five devices. Like the Momentum, it has a slot to allow for a 32GB memory card.

Dallas-based AT&T declined to comment on when the products will be available, adding only that they will sell with the launch of the 4G LTE network, which hasn’t been specified yet. The company is also still working on the data plan prices for the devices.

Charging goods, particularly of the digital variety, to a mobile-phone bill may get more commonplace in the U.S. now that eBay plans to buy Zong, a Silicon Valley company.

The deal is worth $240 million, eBay said. Zong will become part of eBay’s PayPal group once the deal goes through.

Zong’s system makes it easy for phone users to pay for goods, typically inexpensive items like game credits, on their mobile phones. To make a purchase, a user clicks on a button on a website that says “Zong, buy with mobile.” The user enters their mobile number on the payment screen that pops up.

Zong then sends the user a PIN code to their phone. After the user enters the code online, the purchase is complete.

The company has agreements with 250 mobile operators in 45 countries.

PayPal will be able to reach even more users through the acquisition, eBay said. “Zong’s expertise in carrier billing means that it has the potential to reach the more than 4 billion people around the world who have mobile phones — including people who don’t have (or choose not to use) bank accounts or credit cards online. By combining Zong and PayPal, we believe we can offer more services to more customers,” Scott Thompson, PayPal’s president, wrote in a blog post about the deal.

Zong merchant customers that allow end users to charge goods to their cellphone bills include Facebook, Haboo and Playdom.

Carriers outside of the U.S. have been more interested in allowing customers to charge items to their bills, but that appears to be changing. Zong has deals with AT&T and, through BilltoMobile, Verizon, allowing customers of those networks to use its service. BilltoMobile is a Zong competitor but has an agreement with Verizon to provide the direct billing service. Boku is another provider of mobile carrier billing services.

Dan Seifert, MobileBurn, 6/24/2011

News that the HTC EVO 3D had the ability to remove pre-installed apps hit the wires yesterday to much fanfare and appreciation from users and press alike. We reached out to Sprint to get more clarification on the topic and found out that it was in fact intentional, and that we could be seeing more of this in the future.

Bloatware, as pre-installed software has been affectionately termed, has become a bit of a plague on modern smartphones (especially Android), as carriers use it to offset the cost of devices by using it as another revenue stream. Pre-installed apps take up space in the phone’s storage and get in the way of other apps as they clog up application trays with unnecessary icons. Many users find the software to be of little to no use, and very often these permanent icons are just links to download the software from an application store. Verizon Wireless and AT&T are notorious for this practice (I’m looking at you CityID), though we have heard from sources that AT&T is looking to cut back on the pre-installed apps on its future devices.

Sprint has gone the other direction entirely, allowing users to remove the pre-installed apps and replace them with apps of their own choosing. The EVO 3D does not come with a relatively high number of carrier-loaded apps to begin with, but the few that are there can be selectively removed by the end-user (with the exception of Sprint ID). Sprint says that it intentionally did this in response to consumer feedback, and that it looks to continue the practice in the future, though there is no policy on the matter at this point in time. Sprint is the only carrier that we are aware of (in the U.S. at least) that allows users to uninstall apps that come loaded on an Android smartphone. Of course Apple does not allow carriers to load such apps on the iPhone at all, and Windows Phone has always limited the number of pre-installed carrier apps while also allowing them to be removed by the user.

We, as reviewers and users alike, look forward to seeing more of this in the future, and as more and more users catch on and realize that carrier apps often do not provide much value, hopefully other carriers will hear the cries as well. For now though, it looks like Sprint might be your best option to get an Android smartphone sans bloatware.

Citrix this morning announced an investment in mobile technology company Core Mobile Networks, marking the third funding commitment for the company’s Startup Accelerator, its Silicon Valley-based seed investment initiative which debuted in December 2010.

Core Mobile Networks correlates information from enterprise IT systems with content in the cloud, and delivers it to mobile devices such as Apple’s iPhone and Android handsets over AT&T, Verizon, Sprint networks, in real-time, with contextual relevance.

The investment in Core Mobile Networks follows funding commitments made to Primadesk and in a stealth mode company. The program expects to announce more new investments in July as a result of the recent Citrix Startup Accelerator Global Challenge.

The size of the investment was not disclosed, but the Citrix Startup Accelerator program provides companies with seed funding ($100k-$400k) in addition to business mentoring, office space and technical resources.
