T-Mobile to Launch HSPA+ Phone

T-Mobile will release its first HSPA+ phone later this summer, the carrier announced via Twitter on Wednesday.

Naturally, the 140-character limit didn’t allow T-Mobile much room for detail: “Big news! Later this summer, T-Mobile will unveil its first HSPA+-capable smartphone,” T-Mobile said. “More details will be available in the coming weeks.”

The unnamed phone will be the second to call out a next-generation wireless technology as a feature, following the release of the Sprint EVO 4G in May.

T-Mobile also made a number of other announcements on Wednesday, including the expansion of the HSPA+ service – the next-generation of WCDMA technology – to a total of 50 metropolitan areas, serving 85 million people. In addition, the service announced a “Even More Family Plan,” a two-year contract that allows buyers to get the latest messaging phones (the Samsung “:)”, Gravity 3 and Gravity T) for free after a mail-in rebate, plus unlimited texting for the entire family for $20 per month.

T-Mobile’s HSPA+ is now available in: Austin, El Paso, Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Waco, Texas; Baltimore, Md.; Baton Rouge and Lafayette, La.; Birmingham, Ala.; Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, and Dayton, Ohio; Ft. Lauderdale and Jacksonville, Fla.; Greenville, S.C.; Honolulu, Hawaii; Indianapolis, Ind.; Kansas City and St. Louis, Mo.; Milwaukee, Wis.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Portland, Ore.; and Wichita, Kan. In addition, T-Mobile has expanded coverage in cities in previously announced metropolitan areas including Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C. 4G speeds are now available for customers in Alexandria, McLean and Reston, Va.; Anaheim, Burbank, Glendale, Irvine, Long Beach, and Ontario, CA; Annapolis, Bethesda and Chevy Chase, Md.; and Asheville and Hickory, N.C.

T-Mobile also announced the LG dLite, which will cost $49.99 with a two-year service agreement. Offered in bright bubblegum and electric blue color finishes, the LG dLite features a hidden LED matrix on the outside of the phone, T-Mobile Social Buzz, 3G connectivity, personal e-mail, and Visual Voicemail support
