Sprint’s WiMAX Phone

Sprint Nextel has announced details of its HTC EVO, the industry’s first major WiMAX smartphone. The EVO will be available from 4 June for US$199.99 with a two-year contract and features Android’s 2.1 operating system, HDMI output, Wi-Fi capability and a Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon processor with HTC’s Sense user interface.
HTC EVO supports Simultaneous Voice and Data while in 4G coverage and Mobile Video Chat, the two-way voice and video service from Qik. The device features dual cameras (an 8 MP camera with HD-capable video camcorder and a forward-facing 1.3 MP camera), and a 4.3 inch touchscreen display – one of the market’s largest.
Sprint says the Evo 4G will require an Everything Data Plan, which starts at $69.99 per month, and a $10 “Premium Data Add-on” for WiMax, regardless of whether you live in a 4G coverage area. The thought is that with the add-on, you’ll be able to take advantage of 4G speeds if you happen to travel to a supported market. When the device is out of reach of WiMAX networks, it will fall back onto Sprint’s EV-DO 3G networks.
Sprint’s Everything Data 450 plan, at $69/month (plus a $10/month EVO surcharge) includes:
- Unlimited calling in America to any wireless phone (via Any Mobile, Anytime)
- Unlimited Text
- Unlimited Web
- 450 Anytime minutes
Separately, there’s a $29 a month hotspot charge. You can connect up to 8 WiFi-enabled devices to one EVO if you pay that monthly charge — but this is optional.
The HTC EVO 4G is similar to the HTC HD2. Both share the same 4.3-inch touch screen and basic size.
The device, which costs $450 before all discounts, is available for pre-order now and will be sold through all Sprint retail channels as well as via national retail partners RadioShack, BestBuy and Wal-Mart.
