eBay’s Holiday Volume Triples on Smart Phone Apps

eCredit Daily, 12/28/2009

eBay reported that holiday volume on its iPhone and other mobile phone applications tripled compared to last year, with 1.5 million items purchased worldwide.

Nearly 6 million people are carrying access to eBay on their smart phones.

Purchasing items on the go is a trend that analysts say can only increase. According to one report, mobile Internet users will double by 2013 to surpass 1 billion. Credit card companies like the sound of those projections. The majority of mobile purchase transactions are done through PayPal or other established accounts linked to users’ credit or debit cards.

In all of 2009, eBay buyers and sellers registered more than $500 million worth of transactions on their mobiles. eBay shoppers are making 750,000 unique visits a day to eBay via mobile applications.

This holiday season, the purchases ranged from designer handbags to a $75,000 1966 Chevrolet Corvette.

The most expensive items were a $495,000 1965 Shelby Cobra, followed by a 2010 Lamborghini Roadster which sold for $390,000.

“Mobile is changing the way people shop this holiday season,” said Lorrie Norrington, president of eBay marketplaces. “With eBay on your iPhone, great deals are available anytime, anywhere. We see consumers taking advantage of that freedom to find great holiday gifts and deals without sitting at their computer or being stuck at the mall.”

Sunday, Dec. 13, was the biggest shopping day of the year with more than 2.3 million transactions in the U.S., eBay said.

The eBay web application (WAP) site was launched in 2007, and its iPhone application last year. The iPhone app is available in eight languages and is downloadable in 77 countries. It is the third most popular app in the iPhone Lifestyle category.
