Samsung Launches Its Own Mobile OS, Dubbed ‘Bada’

Today Samsung announced that it is preparing to launch its own, open mobile operating system in December of this year. Samsung says the OS, called bada (which means “ocean” in Korean), is simple for developers to create applications and services for, and has a rich graphical user interface that can be incorporated into applications. Bada is not a new smartphone operating system, but it is meant to enable smartphone-like features on mid-range handsets. Samsung says that it will be cultivating a developer community and pitching Bada to network operators around the world. Samsung is making the core features of the OS (dialer, messaging, and address book) available to developers so that applications can incorporate these basic functions of the device. Bada-based phones will also be able to access content from Samsung’s own mobile applications store.
